VDI - Why You Should Always Question The Numbers

Hi Friends,

I've put out some blogs before about properly sizing your desktops and how important it is to get actual numbers from your customers, BUT you need to be able to trust those numbers.  So what the heck am I talking about?  One reason I've seen many VDI implementations fail is the unwillingness to change how the desktops operate.  Let me explain....  Show of hands, how many people still have a physical desktop and the day you have a virus scan run you either:

A. Pause the virus scan indefinitely.

or

B. Go do something else that doesn't involve your computer for 2-3 hours.

Sure you can try and slog your way through the pain and be productive during this time, but it is painful and it feels the more you fight it, the longer the scan takes.  Plus, now that hard drives are larger than ever before, virus scans take that much more time.

This is what I mean by changing how desktops operate.  These outlying events REALLY tweak your sizing numbers and to size your VDI environment to absorb  these events would have you buy an enormous amount of hardware that would cost you a fortune!

One of the key reasons VDI hasn't taken off is cost and there are multiple reasons that I won't go into right now, but I do want to discuss the affects of these outlying events.  They will skew your numbers and will push your implementation to a whole new level of cost to absorb events that might happen 2-3% of the time.  Virus scans, OS patches, just to name a couple.

So am I saying ignore those outlying events and size for a smaller environment?  No, what I'm saying is for VDI to be cost affective AND functionally affective we need to change the way we think.  Virus scanning and OS patches are administrative functions that can't be ignored, but this is the perfect time to be creative and look for alternative methods to solve the problem.

A friend of mine once told me there's always a bottleneck and during an assessment you want to make sure your product is not the bottleneck.  In VDI implementations these events are certainly the bottlenecks and we want to shift them so the users don't have to suffer through them AND help limit the expense of the project.  Luckily there are some great products out there to do this and I'll cover some of them later, but I wanted to write this first article to get you thinking that you need to question the numbers!  If they don't look right, heck, even if they look right, question your customer's and find out what's happening in their environment.  They'll thank you for it!  :-)

Here are a couple of examples for you.

These are Performance Monitor outputs from my computer.  The first is me just doing regular work, I've got email open, a ton of internet browsers open, I've got YouTube running and you can see that the writes are higher then the reads.  The writes are really low, so I'm only running about 10 IOPs total.





















This next graph is still my computer, but with a virus scanner scanning my hard drive.  You can see the reads are just going nuts!  I'm still doing my other work like before, but my desktop is just getting hammered by 176 read IOPs and 15 write IOPs with a total of 191 IOPs!


Yes I know this is something that probably only runs once a week and yes I know using a mean calculation would flatten out this peak over time, BUT my point is these types of events will severely impact your results.  Even if the peak flattens out to 76 IOPs per desktop, that's going to be a VERY expensive desktop when 99% of the time the IOPs are only running around 10.

If you've assessed the environment and have performance numbers I'm proud of you!  But we have to go to the next step to make sure we know what's going on in the environment.  This way we don't charge the customer for a sports car when all they really need is a nice 4 door sedan.  :-)

Nimble Scale-Out - The Curtain is Drawn - Part III - Let's Talk About Pools?

Hi Friends,

Today I'm going to continue my Nimble Scale-Out introduction and talk to you today about pools.
















Nope, not this kind of pool Mom.  My Mother loves pools and keeps telling me I need one.  Well Nimble Pools aren't concrete bowls with tile and plaster, and they require a whole lot less chlorine!

Over the last few days I talked about what groups are and joining groups.  So back to my example, if the group is the gated community with all of the amenities, then pools are the social activities all the residents are part of.  You just moved into the Las Casas Caras gated community and your next door neighbor Chip finds out you're a golfer!  The two of you hop into his hybrid and go play 18 holes!

What the heck does any of this have to do with Scale-Out?!  It will all become clear momentarily...  Chad's your other neighbor, he's a nice guy but doesn't like golf.  So let's examine the scenario I've painted below.  Chad is on the left.  He's not part of the golf club, so he's in Pool 1.  Notice the bubble over his head?  Since he's not part of the club he's not sharing his thoughts and ideas with anyone.  Now take a look at Pool 2.  There's you and Chip and you're giving each other a high 5 because you just got an eagle on the 14th hole that was rated a par 7.  Not bad!!  Notice the bubble above your and Chip's head?  Well you two are sharing information about the course, your jobs, how Brad's dog keeps pooping all over the neighborhood, etc.  This is now shared information between the two of you.

In a nut shell, that's Pools!  Instead of Chad, Chip and you, there are arrays and the conversations are volumes that data stripes and balances to each array in the pool.

Say you and Chip have a falling out about hybrid vs. all electric vehicles and you no longer want to go golfing with him.  You can leave the pool, but you'll have to transfer all the information you know about golfing, and Brad's pooping dog over to Chip before you can leave.  Make sure Chip's brain can hold that extra amount of data cause if it doesn't, you can't leave!  Once you leave there will be 3 pools unless you decide to join Chad in the fishing club.  Similar to groups, you can have a maximum of 4 pools.

Nimble Scale-Out - The Curtain is Drawn - Part II - What's a Group? - Part II (How Many Parts Do We Got In This Thing?)

Okay, okay, all of these Part #, Part # are probably really annoying, but I realized after reading my blog that I left some things out that I really wanted to tell you about regarding groups.  So instead of trying to tack on extra stuff to the original article, yada, yada, yada, you get it.

If you didn't notice there's a lot of cool new stuff to 2.x, but there are some caveats to be aware of.  Nothing Earth shattering, but stuff I feel you should be armed with before you jump head first into the deep end of 2.x.

Okay, so let's quickly go over the benefits of 2.x.

1.  4 array GUI's in 1. (Ease of administration!)
2.  Add new arrays to the group as you purchase new hardware.
3.  Remove old hardware with no downtime as they retire.


So somethings to watch out for when going to 2.x.
1.  Networking.  Yep, we covered this in the previous blog post.
2.  Volumes.  Source groups vs. Destination groups.
3.  DR and replication.

Let's talk about 2.  The Source group is the group or array that's going to merge into the Destination group.  We covered this a little bit, that the Source will lose most of it's identity, when it joins the Destination.  Now if this is a new array, NO problem, but what if it's an existing array with volumes and data being served?  If it has data and volumes, those volumes have to be temporarily taken offline while the array/Source joins the Destination.  Not a huge issue, but something to keep in mind if your Source already has data on it.

How about 3.  Similar to number 2, replication needs to be paused during the merge.  But something more to think about is if you happen to be replicating between the Source array and Destination array, that won't work anymore with arrays in the same group.  Again, not Earth shattering, but something to keep in mind if you're implementing this at your site.

Now what happens if you realize the gated community is just not for you?  The neighborhood kids pee in the pool and the rules are too strict.  Can you pick up your array and leave?  You sure can!  Again there are caveats and you'll need to migrate shared volumes, snapshots, clones, etc.  But, all joking aside this is a VERY cool feature when you've got an older array in your group that you're looking to either retire or turn into a DR array.

Nimble Scale-Out - The Curtain is Drawn - Part II - What's a Group?

Hi Friends,

Today I'm going to go into a bit more depth when adding 2.x arrays to an existing 2.x group.  Remember I showed you how easy it was and I said, "Well, it's a little more involved then that."?  Today I thought I'd show you what's involved and maybe some other bits.

So if you're upgrading a 1.x array to a 2.x array you need to start thinking about your network.  Since this is going to be a cluster some of the individuality that you had with 1.x will be lost when you upgrade to 2.x and join a group.  Now I just used the word "group" a couple of times, and you're probably thinking, "Okay, what's a group?"  Well, it's just that, it's a bunch of arrays(up to 4) joined together to form a group.  And once an array joins a group, it gets all the rights and privileges an array gets at this point.  It's kind of like moving into a fancy gated community.

Sounds pretty exciting eh?  So how does an array get ready to join this exclusive club?  Just like in real life, networking my friends!

Let's take a look at this networking GUI.  I've already added "whenyou" to the same group "wenster" belonged to.  If you haven't guessed it yet, these were named by my buddy Wendel. :-)  Now take a look "iSCSI Host Connection Method".  This is new concept if you've only worked with 1.x.  If you upgrade an array from 1.x to 2.x most likely it will have "Manual" and "Enable rebalancing" not selected.  If you want that array to remain a separate entity, that's okay, just leave it alone.  It can happily live out it's life being a loner and serving up data as a 2.x array without ever being part of a group.  But if you want to live in the fancy community with the dog park and the swimming pool you're going to need the networking and learn to work with others.

Also notice the "Virtual Target IP", another new concept.  Now that you're networking with others, you need an easy way for data to get from point A to B.  I still have data IP's for "wenster" and "whenyou", but now the Virtual Target IP helps sort what data needs to go where automatically!  I know what you're thinking, "How do you keep data from going over the wrong pipes?"  That's an EXCELLENT question!  And all I'm going to say is Nimble's got you covered!  I'll probably write about that in a day or two.  I will say when you populate a group, you're going to want to switch from "Manual" to "Automatic" and select the "Enable rebalancing".

































Now, back to networking.  Remember I said that before you start adding arrays to group, think about networking and here's why.























When you try to add an array to a group the array going to try and keep you from making any mistakes.  Pay particular attention to bullets 1, 2, 3, oh heck just read them all!  We wouldn't put them there if they weren't important.  Remember, don't be like Neil and not read the pop ups, they're not there to just annoy you.

Done reading the bullets?  So what we've got is two arrays, "wenster" and "whenyou" and both now belong to a group called "hulk."  Hulk will now take over much of the network identity of the new array that's been added.  Is there a downside to this?  No, not really, BUT you need to remember to prepare for the changes.  It's all about the networking my friends!

So after you've clicked Finish with out reading any of the bullets you will hopefully get this message box.  What!  Wait a second, go back and read those bullet points!


















As stated in the earlier bullet points, you'll reconfigure your applications to use the "hulk" or group target IP address and the management of the individual arrays is handled by the group management IP address.

You've just taken the first step to a bright and brand new world.  It's like in the Wizard of Oz where it goes from black and white to color.  Black and white is cool, nothing wrong with it, but WOW what a difference the world looks like in color!

Citrix XenDesktop 7.1 on Microsoft Hyper-V 2012 with Nimble Storage and Cisco UCS

Hi Friends,

We've all been hearing a lot more buzz about Microsoft Hyper-V 2012.  Will it be the next Hypervisor of choice?  Only time will tell, but if you're like me and want to hear about and read all the cool new VDI architectures you'll enjoy this one!  Citrix Consulting tested Hyper-V 2012 with the new version of XenDesktop 7.1 along with Cisco UCS and Nimble Storage.

The cool thing is that if you're looking to implement something similar, this document will be a huge help!  This is a complex machine they've built and have done a great job at it.  If you know me, you know I love mechanical watches.  Just the accuracy and art work that goes into creating a mechanical time piece is like an evening at the symphony.  This architecture might not make music, but watching all of these complex parts come together to build a functioning system is quite impressive!  As I continue to dissect this whitepaper I'll be blogging on it more, but I wanted to share it.

How to Setup MultiPath (MPIO) with Nimble Storage and Citrix XenServer

Hi Friends,

Here's a follow up to my Citrix XenServer blog that showed you how to attach Nimble Storage to XenServer.  This article will show you how to set up MPIO with Nimble and XenServer.  It was written by a colleague of mine, so a HUGE thanks to Klaus Kupfer!!


 1.  Configure each Data Interface on the Nimble Array to a different subnet.



2. Configure Multipathing on the XEN Host
      a.       Put XEN Server in Maintenance Mode



 b.      Access XEN Server Properties


 


c.       Enable Multipathing
d.      Exit Maintenance Mode
























3. Check that the XEN Server NIC’s are in the same subnets as the Nimble Data Interfaces


4.  Edit the /etc/multipath.conf File using console
  
device {
vendor                                    "Nimble"
product                                  "Server"
path_selector                         "round-robin 0"
path_grouping_policy           group_by_serial
rr_weight                                priorities

5.  Reboot the XEN Server

6. Create New SR 
     a.       Obtain initiator IQN
     b.      Configure Volume on Nimble on Nimble array with all desired settings and LUN initiator groups


c.       Choose New SR...

 


d.  Choose "Software iSCSI“ as Storage Type


 
e.       Configure a name for the SR



  
f.        Enter the iSCSI Discovery AddressThen click first  "Discover IQNs“ and then "Discover LUNs“ The configured Volume should appear in the list



 g.  Finished

Nimble Scale-Out - The Curtain is Drawn - Part I

Hi Friends,

In today's blog I wanted to dive a bit deeper into the new features available with Nimble Scale-Out.  When you get your first storage array it's great, you've got your GUI or CLI and you're ready to go!  But then you get your second and it too has a GUI, which is okay.  Then a 3rd with another GUI, which is starting to get confusing.  Let's top is off with a fourth which, it too has it's own GUI.  Did I just delete the volume on Array 1 or Array 4?  Ugh oh....

You get my point, when you have multiple GUI's open, it starts to get a bit confusing.  The cool thing about Scale-Out is you have one GUI, and you don't have to download a separate tool to administer your cluster!  Yep, it's all built in.  Basically you elect one array to be your leader and it's the first one to join the cluster.  As others join they give up their ability to have a separate front end GUI, since you'll be using the "leaders" IP address to administer from 1 to 4 arrays.

What if you want the ability to have a single pane of administration glass, but prefer each array to be their own entity.  You're not ready to start striping volumes or use some of the newer features.  That's okay!  Scale-Out isn't an all or nothing upgrade, you can jump into the deep end or slowly get your feet wet at the shallow end of the pool.

How about some pictures?


Here's we've got a single array called Anooba.  It's group is called t1 (I'll get into groups a little later on) and it's the only array in the group.  We'll click on the Add Array to Group button and....






















We get a box that shows us the available 2.x arrays available on the network.  Pretty cool huh?  Click on the one you want to add, here I select Bantha.  Click on the Add button.













What?!  A password dialog!?!  Yep, believe me, this is a GOOD thing, you don't want arrays magically appearing in your cluster.

After you enter your password for the array you're trying to add to the cluster, click Connect.

















Check it out!  Both arrays are there.  Was it really that easy?  Well, I cheated a little.  There are some networking considerations that you need to be aware of when adding arrays to your cluster, but that's for another blog.  Hey, I gotta get you coming back!

Now Introducing Nimble Scale-Out! This IS The Storage You're Looking For!

Hi Friends,

Today I'd like to introduce a super cool new product put out by Nimble Storage.  Scale-Out, Nimble's  next gen version of storage.  Yeah yeah, I'm sure you've heard that a lot and you're thinking, "Blah blah blah, show me the money!"  Ever watch Looney Tunes?  You're probably thinking Scale-Out is like this:
















Well my friends in this case you'd be wrong!  Scale-Out is much more like this:
















And the great thing about about it?  You can download it today!  It's a release candidate that's available for download through InfoSight.  And in most cases will work on your existing hardware.  AH HA!  You're thinking, "Most cases, meaning not my case."  No, it'll probably work on your hardware too, but there's always a small percentage so it's best to check with your account team.

Okay, okay so Michigan J. Frog aside, let's talk about what's so fab about it.

A large differentiator between Nimble and other storage is it doesn't rely on spindles for performance.  CPUs are cheap, we use them for our performance.  Disks are just a way to store your stuff cheaply!  You need more storage, add a shelf of disks.  Now what if you want the ability to administer your storage from a single GUI?  Stripe a volume across all of your storage controllers for smoking fast performance?  The ability to evacuate an entire controller for maintenance or storage replacement with NO downtime?























Yes, friends, you get this, the car polish AND the set of knives....  Sorry couldn't help myself.

Want to know what else is cool?  The GUI hardly changes too!  When I did my first upgrade I thought I had done something wrong because it looked too much like 1.x Nimble.

At first glance, not much difference huh?  I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it didn't!  Now of course there are differences in there and some caveats before upgrading which I'll go through in another blog, but on the painful scale I don't think it was even a stubbed toe!

Neil Versus PVS - Part IV - Multiple Sites with KMS

Hi Friends,

Here's an interesting one that I ran into while working with multiple PVS Sites.  After the fact it seems kind of straight forward, but at the time I really had no idea what was going on.

If you take a look at my architecture I have three sites and two PVS servers gong to each site.  Ignore "Site" I was using that for testing.  :-)
 


The thought was with multiple PVS servers, you'll probably start having multiple sites too.  It's also easier with house keeping when you start collecting a lot of servers, volumes, vdisks, etc.  My vDisks are all sitting on a CIFS share so I don't have to have multiple vDisk images, which is VERY handy.  There's only one small problem and I probably wouldn't have discovered it for awhile, but thanks to KMS, my life got very interesting!

I decided to log into UCSPVS3 which was my third PVS server.  I loaded up the Provisioning Services Console and everything looked normal.  I could even manipulate vDisk images mapped to Site 1!  Now that's cool!  Now here's where the problem began.  I went to change the vDisk from Private image mode to Standard image mode and I got this error message:


Unable to map the vDisk.  Mapping was denied by the Server.  Huh?  And when I turned KMS off as an option under vDisk Properties, it switched from Private to Standard image just fine!  So what the heck?

You might be saying, "Just use the Site your vDisk is assigned to Neil!!"  Well, yeah, but isn't the point of having it on a CIFS share is I can share it from anywhere?

Well, not exactly.  So here's something I found out.  When you have the KMS option enabled in the vDisk Properties, the vDisk momentarily gets mounted up as a volume in Microsoft Disk Management on the PVS server you're trying to switch from Private to Standard image.

Here in lies the problem....  I was trying to mount up the volume on a PVS server that didn't have the vDisk assigned to it!  As I said earlier, the only reason I had this problem is with KMS enabled the volume gets momentarily mounted.  So if not for KMS, I probably wouldn't have bumped into this unless I tried to mount up the vDisk.

After the fact it seemed so simple and straight forward, but sometimes when you're lost in the forest, it's hard to see the trees!  :-)

Videos Won't Play With XenDesktop 7

Hi Friends,

This one was a painful issue!  One of the tests Login VSI runs is video and when I'd get to this part of the test the video would just freeze!























The script calls an HTML file which forwards the webpage to an mp4 file.  To make matters worse when I wasn't running through the Citrix Receiver it would work just fine!  So I started creating policies like crazy in XenDesktop.  I enabled Legacy Graphics, adjusted audio, this, that, and those, but still my video just froze.  Sorry, started channeling Dr. Seuss.  :-)

I was using Internet Explorer 10 and downgraded it to 9 and that didn't work either.  Dennis from Login VSI saved the day!  Under Tools/Internet Options/Advanced, we selected the Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering*.
































I'm sure there's a registry setting to fix this or a Policy in XenDesktop to fix this, but I have NO idea which one it is.  So if you're rolling out XenDesktop 7 and your users start complaining their videos won't play, maybe this will work for you!

Simple Power Shell Script To Log Off Remote Desktop Users

Hi Friends,

As I've mentioned I'm running automation using Login VSI to test multiple VDI user logins and the problem is clean up.  Isn't clean up ALWAYS a nightmare!?  Well, I've pieced together a small Power Shell script that I've taken from 3 or 4 sources around the Net that I'd like to share with you.  Don't forget to save the file as a .ps1 for Power Shell.

So here's what it does. 

1.  You create a text file called servers.txt, or whatever you'd like and populate it with the names of the machines you want users logged off from.  If your machines are numbered sequentially and easy way to populate the file is using Excel.

2.  For the $cred variable you put in your domain and user who will be logging folks out.

3.  You kick off the script and a dialog box will pop up asking for your password.  This will be the only time it needs the password for that run.

So if you're cleaning up 4 or 40,000, this is a simple script to help you out.  I wish I could remember which sites I pieced the script together from, but I  can't remember.  So I'll send out a blanket thanks for all the sites that helped me!

Neil versus PVS - Part III - More Fun Then Should Be Allowed!

Still fighting with PVS, I think I might have it under control now, but it was touch and go for a few days there!  More errors and possible solutions for you if you're tackling a large roll out.  All I can say is working with a large number of desktops on PVS, I have a new respect for people who work with this product every day!  It's a powerful product, but man is it particular!

I've created a CIFS share through Microsoft file sharing and put my vDisk on the share.  Everyone is happy, I'm able to create multiple desktops without a problem.  Now it's time to add a second PVS server to share the load, the plot thickens....  I add the new PVS server using the PVS Provisioning Wizard, it adds great, shows up, the store path validates, but when I look at the vDisk Pool or vDisks in my store it shows up as No Server.  No Server what the heck does that mean?!  You're there, you have the path, people like you, how can you be No Server?  So off to Google!

I look around and find a couple of articles on the Citrix forums, but not a 1:1 condition or concrete answer.  While reading there are a number of folks that talk about permission issues.  Now in the vDisk store you've got essentially three files, the vDisk itself which is the VHD, a LOK file and a PVP file.  Some advice, MAKE A BACKUP of the files before you start messing with or deleting them!!  I decided to start checking the permissions and I noticed that "Users" only had read, read/execute, so I added full control and the vDisk showed up as useable on my second server!!  The only problem is it kept acting weird.  It would pause a lot when I would click on the vDisk, sometimes get hung up, so I knew something else was still wrong.  To top it off when I tried to access the vDisk on boot from a desktop I would get vdisk is locked 0xffff800c.  If I tried using the XenDesktop Setup Wizard I got this error, A required PVS server in the selected site is offline or there is no server assigned to a required store.  I don't know about Denmark, but something was definitely rotten in San Jose!

The weird thing is the first server kept behaving fine, so what's the deal?  I deleted the vDisk and reimported it and now BOTH, yes BOTH showed No Server.  Hey, at least I'm getting somewhere, where that is, I have NO idea!  But I knew it wasn't some place I wanted to stay for long.

Off to the Microsoft share server!  I removed the share and noticed I couldn't add it back!  So I copied over the vDisk contents to a share that was behaving and guess what?  Both servers are now serving the vDisk!

So what's this teach us?  If you're getting weird access errors like this, check your shares.  I think by changing the permissions on the PVP file I was able to sort of fool PVS into sort of working, but the problem was at a higher level.  Why the first server was working, until I removed and re-added the vDisk, NO IDEA!  But if this can help just one person avoid some of the pain I encountered, my job is done!  :-)
